Golden 1984: Rawmatterial’s Workshop Chap. 3

‘We delved into a deep understanding of the text through a very intimate and honest work on ourselves.’ Participant’s feedback, The Actor-Creator, Chap.2, March 2013

The third phase of Rawmatterial’s Laboratory on Orwell’s 1984, introducing the actor as creator, is coming up in May and is a most exciting step. The actors, with a re-discovered scenic self, will make 1984 the object of their play. From deconstruction to composition, Orwell’s opus will reveal and be revealed.

Even if you have not attended the first two phases you can still apply and take the challenge: it will be of a huge benefit to you as an actor. At the end of this phase, the laboratory process might open its doors to an invited audience.

Sessions are led by actors and directors Maria Gaitanidi and Stéphane Poliakov from Rawmatterial. Their method of work is new to the UK and combines elements from two of the greatest Russian theatre practitioners Maria Knebel and Anatoli Vassiliev. The pedagogical approach aims at obliterating theatrical clichés, renewing the relationship to the poetic self of the actor in the world we live in today.

The workshop requires commitment, a hunger for experimenting on alternative artistic approaches, and a good sense of humour! Theatre professionals, actors, drama students and anyone interested are welcome to apply. Places are limited to 5 to ensure high quality of training both tailored to each participant’s needs and to the group as an ensemble.

When – 7-18 May 2013
10am-4pm every day, except Thurs 16 and Fri 17: 11am-6pm, and Saturday 18: 11am-5pm.

Selected participants will be emailed details about what they have to prepare and other practical requirements. The spring workshop fee is £275 per participant.

The Actor-Creator: Rawmatterial’s Workshop Vol.2

‘In terms of working as an actor, it has made me more aware of my own potential in creating material, rather than responding to a director’s interpretation or vision. It has made me aware of my potential as a creator.’ Workshop participant, Actor-Creator Vol.1, Nov 2012

Applications are now open for Rawmatterial’s workshop on George Orwell’s 1984. Following the first phase in Autumn 2012 exploring the scenic presence of the actor via monologues (to read previous participants’ feedback please click here), we are continuing our journey focusing this time on scenes and dialogues. The actors will delve into the author’s text unveiling, through the practice of the étude, an original dramatic composition.

How to preserve the actor’s organicity and creative freedom? How is a scene or a dialogue between two actors, constructed in partnership within a structured improvisation? What entails the actor’s presence in the now, balancing equally between the author’s text, the self and the space?

Participants will be asked to have read Orwell’s 1984 and other textual material from a list which will be communicated in due time.

Beyond the spring workshop
The spring workshop is the second part of a threefold training initiative culminating in a performance in 2013. The third workshop series will take place in May 2013, leading to a selection of participants who will take part in our May 2013 performance in London.

The 1st phase in the exploration of Orwell’s 1984 is now completed. Our participants have been amazingly open, ready to experiment and question their prejudices. Thank you for having joined our path. A great thank you to the Poetry Place who offered their sunny, quiet space. We are already excited about the continuation and our General Manager Sylvain is working on the organisation of the 2nd phase due to take place in late February, early March 2013.

Meanwhile Rawmatterial is planning other surprise events because Not Acting is Unconsciousness!

Feedback from participants:

‘Definitely the ‘non character’ approach and the monologue which starts from you on ‘core’ words on the text will be useful for my future preparation for auditions and camera works.’

‘Overall I learnt that this way of working with the material makes it very much alive for the actor, as new questions about the meaning are constantly arising, and the work and actor in turn become more alive.’

‘In terms of working as an actor, it has made me more aware of my own potential in creating material, rather than responding to a director’s interpretation or vision. It has made me aware of my potential as a creator.’

‘ I believe that I experienced something different in terms of how to work with material and the space and a partner doing improvisation. The explorations that I both witnessed and participated in made me reflect back on the actor’s presence, organicity, the “real” and the “pretend” play, what is preparation and where it happens in the actor’s body? Mind? Imagination? Loooots of questions!’

This intense 9 day workshop is part of a threefold training project culminating in a theatre performance (more details below). The first encounter will explore the scenic presence of the performer: What is our acting organicity? How do we become creators, with ourselves and the author as sources? Through structured improvisations based on literary texts and in the form of monologues, the actors will develop their own means of expression.

The material of the sessions will be fuelled by Orwell’s 1984 and related literature such as Beckett’s short novels, amongst others.

The workshop requires commitment, a hunger for experimenting on alternative artistic approaches, and a good sense of humour! Theatre professionals, actors, drama students and anyone interested are welcome to apply. You do not need to be familiar with the work of Rawmatterial or the Russian school to participate, but simply be open to new horizons. Places are limited to 10, to ensure high quality of training both tailored to each participant’s needs and to the group as an ensemble.

‘I love the idea of ‘Dialogue on Beauty’being entirely out of the range of stereotypical beauty – mind-shaking.’ Gillain Alban

‘Fantastic – Special well done to Rawmatterial.’ Ama Williams

‘Fantastic pieces, enjoyed the room about beauty, questioning our perception. Wonderful.’ Anonymous

‘All the best with this beginning towards the highest creative goal. We will steps in your next steps.’ Deppy and Mariza

‘This art is not only inward as I feel most are, but also outward, catering to awareness, human awareness of simple beauty based on necessity from which we draw abstract reasoning. I do hope to return. Thank you.’ Cody

‘I thought it was fantastic.’

‘Great performance!’

‘I found it an incredibly compelling performance and was totally engaged. This in spite of the fact that my language skills kept up for about 20 seconds! That said, I wonder if not understanding the words allowed me to become absorbed in a different way from my usual theatrical experience. Rather than wondering “why that phrasing” “what’s the hidden meaning of that word” I could experience it on a purely visceral level, which perhaps ties in to the idea of action which was discussed in the debate.’

‘All in all thoroughly enjoyed it and would definitely like to see more from Rawmatterial in the future.’

‘I think what you’re doing is really inspiring.’

‘I was worried at first that not being an actor, or knowing much about it that I wouldn’t get anything out of it, but I did learn from the evening, which was really nice.’
